Suppository
A suppository dosage form is a solid medication made from a base material (e.g., cocoa butter, glycerinated gelatin, or synthetic polymers) designed for insertion into body cavities such as the rectum, vagina, or urethra, where it melts, dissolves, or disintegrates to deliver the active drug. This dosage form is ideal for localized or systemic drug effects. There are three shapes included: Rectal Suppositories are Torpedo-shaped and slightly tapered for easy insertion, Vaginal Suppositories (Pessaries) is Oval or globular and Urethral Suppositories are Slender and cylindrical
Advantages
- Localized Effects: Direct delivery to the site of action (e.g., hemorrhoids, vaginal infections).
- Systemic Effects: Bypasses the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, avoiding first-pass metabolism (useful for drugs like analgesics or anti-nausea medications).
- Alternative to Oral Route: Useful for patients who cannot swallow tablets or capsules due to vomiting, unconsciousness, or difficulty swallowing.
- Sustained Release: Provides gradual release of the medication over time.
- Reduced Irritation: Avoids gastric irritation that some drugs cause when taken orally.
